December is one of my FAVORITE months of the year, and this year is no exception! It’s easy to tie the holidays into learning, and one of my favorite lessons this year has been my “How Holiday Music Makes Me Feel” for my Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade GT students. This activity incorporated many intelligences, including artistic, musical, and intrapersonal. Not to mention, the students LOVED it!
For this lesson, each child first put together their mini booklet. Then, I played aloud 8 different holiday songs from a variety of cultures. I used more popular songs for my Kinders and first graders and all instrumental songs for my second graders, including several songs from the Nutcracker Suite. I put together two playlists on Spotify that included the following, although I didn’t reveal the titles of the songs until the very end because I didn’t want it to influence their impressions:
Using their “self smarts” (or intrapersonal skills), students then sketched how each song made them feel.
Finally, students chose their “favorite” song sketch/feeling and used watercolors to turn it into a more polished piece.
This lesson would be perfect in the regular classroom, either as a whole class activity or incorporated into your classroom Listening Center.
