Poetry Favorites for Your Literacy Centers

Slide1

I absolutely LOVE teaching poetry!!!

Tonight on Literacy Centers Made EASY @iteachtvnetwork on Periscope, I shared five of my all time favorite poetry formats that also double as go-to literacy centers. I am often asked by viewers to share my slides and ideas in a written format, so from now on each week, I will post my slides here for you to access, print, and use! No more emailing back and forth! 🙂

To recap, here are my five favorite poetry centers.  Make sure to introduce the poetry format as a whole class first, model and complete an example together, and have students choose a topic to practice before putting them in literacy centers for students to write independently.

These poetry formats also make fantastic class books, gifts for parents, and displays for hallways or Parent Teacher Conferences.  They can also be compiled into individual student poetry portfolios.

Bio Poems, Cinquains, and Acrostics can be written about students themselves, family members, friends/classmates, teachers, historical figures, and book characters.  Each year, my first grade book club writes Cinquain Valentines for special people in their lives.

Concrete and Haiku poems are ideal to write about holidays and seasons. For this time of year, that means lots of writing about snow days and winter fun!
