Many of you who follow my website know that since the summer of 2015, I became an active “Scoper” on the video-based, live-streaming platform known as “Periscope.” From the first moment I watched Angie Olson and Ashley Schroeder broadcast live from the TpT Conference in Vegas, I was completely hooked. Many people ask me, including teachers in my district, “What’s all this I hear about Periscope?” and “Why is Periscope different than teachers using any other form of social media?”
Well, maybe it’s because there’s something different about seeing and hearing from talented educators face-to-face, instead of simply skimming an educational blog post, pinning a cute idea on Pinterest, or buying a product from a TpT author. All of a sudden, Periscope brings a certain credibility and “realness” to those same teachers behind the ideas and resources as they share strategies and resources in video form. You can even watch their Periscopes live, in the moment, and “chat” with them through comments and questions. You can also screenshot ideas during videos and post them directly to your Facebook and Twitter feeds!
What I’ve come to determine about Periscope is simply this: most passionate teachers are organically drawn to and inspired by other passionate teachers. What started off as a fun and intriguing way to connect with teachers across the world has become a rich, authentic form of professional development and camaraderie that brings ALL those passionate teachers together. I mean, If that doesn’t give you teacher chills, I don’t know what will!
Don’t know where to begin?! Start with a Twitter account. (You don’t have to Tweet, just register an account.) Download the Periscope app on your mobile device, touch the magnifying glass in the corner, and start searching for teacher names or organizations to follow. My account is @brookebrowntpt, and you can click the “Following” button on my account to see all the stellar scopers I love to follow.
Another awesome account to follow ASAP is @iteachtvnetwork. Founded by the incredible Sheila Jane of Sheila Jane Teaching, iteachtv features over 20 teacher seller experts who scope according to scheduled topics for 15 minutes each week. It’s fast, FREE, and packed with high quality educational content. Best of all, you can watch only the scope topics that apply or appeal to your interests and watch them on replay FOREVER through Katch on the website. Many school districts have approved iteachtvnetwork for Professional Development points! My show image is below and my show is called Literacy Centers Made EASY!
Many teachers, thanks to the support and encouragement from big name Periscopers such as Jen Jones of Hello Literacy, are overcoming fears to flip the Periscope camera and begin sharing their classrooms, resources, and teaching expertise. (Read more about Jen’s Periscope journey and perspectives here.) All I can say is, the more the merrier!! If you haven’t tried watching educational Periscopes, here are my 3 big reasons that you should start watching TODAY.
I mentioned this before, but the realities of the daily life of a teacher are much easier to bear when we can identify with other teachers “in the trenches.” The teachers I love to watch on Periscope, like me, have been in the classroom all day with real students, real instructional strategies, and real problems. The connections I feel with those teachers are powerful, and I love being able to type a comment or question to them on the spot as they are scoping for immediate feedback.
I am a huge believer that Professional Development, whenever possible, should NEVER be a “one size fits all” approach because teachers are not “one size fits all” in terms of experience, strengths, needs, and passions. Periscope meets that need perfectly because we can watch only scopers and topics that appeal to those needs.
This is a big one for me, as it should be for all teachers. Our time is PRECIOUS, and now that I’m a teacher momma of two, it’s even more precious. Ain’t nobody got time for time wasters!! I love that Periscope is fast and to the point. Instant PD gratification. And if I can’t catch scopes live, the replay is waiting for me at a time that is most convenient for me.
So what are you waiting for?! Try Periscope NOW! I can’t wait to hear how much you love it!
